The year is 2020. Our technology has advanced sadly our mindsets haven’t. While we speak up about issues of race and gender bias, some also still judge people based on how they dress and whom they love.

Here are 6 stereotypes people need to STOP believing about the LGBTQ community-

1) YOU CAN “CURE” HOMOSEXUALITY

Cures we need to be looking for - CoronaVirus

Cures we are trying to find - Homosexuality

In 1973, Homosexuality was removed from the DSM as a mental disorder by the American Psychiatric Association. Sadly, some ‘doctors’ are still trying to find a “cure” for loving someone of the same gender as you. There has always been a taboo circling Homosexuality and conversion camps no less than Nazi ones. The year is 2020 and it’s time we stop treating Homosexuality as an illness we need to get rid of.

2) YOU CAN’T BE QUEER AND RELIGIOUS

Correct us if we are wrong but doesn’t God love everyone? Aren’t we all God’s children?

Most religions believe homosexuality goes against the pillars of their belief though from a survey by BuzzFeed News only 39% members of LGBTQ community have no religious affiliations.

Our views - The year is 2020 and Religion is a personal choice available to all humans regardless of gender identities and sexual preferences.

3) SAME SEX PARENTS HARM CHILDREN

For the longest of times, we’ve been taught that a “normal” family consists of a mommy, a daddy and maybe an annoying sibling or two but what does a “happy” family consist of?

According to LiveScience’s 2010 research for the truth about this traditional notion of normal, it was established that there is absolutely NO difference between children raised by hetrosexual parents and homosexual parents.

Guess it has more to do with love and nourishment then. The year is 2020 and blended families are a reality.

4) BISEXUALS ARE JUST CONFUSED

There is a lot of defamation when it comes to the B in LGBTQ. Most bisexuals are stereotyped as dipping a foot in two ponds, being confused and even incapable of forming monogamous relationships.

Though the truth of the matter is that they can be attracted to two or even all genders and that’s totally valid. You can even prefer a gender.

The year is 2020 and you can find a lot of people cute if you want.

5) GAY MEN ARE FLAMBOYANT

This notion has been believed since the very word ‘gay’ came into existence. Gay men are stereotyped as being feminine and in a 2017 review for Attitude magazine 69% of them have admitted feeling less masculine at some point in time.

In the light of the hypocrisy that exists in society where we are taught to not judge based on appearance, most still do.

The year is 2020 and we need to stop categorizing a community of acting or dressing a certain way.

6) LESBIANS ARE MAN HATERS

“Women who like women, don’t need men or more so despise them.”

“Feminists are just angry man hating lesbians”

“Lesbians are covered in tattoos, have short hair and are manly”

These are few of the many stereotypes that revolve around the community though most studies show that Lesbians in fact maintain relationships with many men, whether friends, colleagues or family but only have a different inclination when it comes to romantic relationships.

And lets be honest, Can’t you totally picture men and lesbians checking out girls together?

The year is 2020 and we need to start accepting all kinds of love.
